New scam aimed at EMC consumers

While there have not been any reports of this particular scam, Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC) members should be on guard for the latest ploy to obtain quick cash and personal information such as credit card and social security numbers.

“Be aware of callers claiming they are with Habersham EMC and demanding immediate payment or threatening immediate disconnection,” says Susan Baker with Habersham EMC.

Scammers Targeting Habersham EMC Members

Habersham EMC has been notified that some members have received telephone calls stating their power would be disconnected immediately unless they provided a credit card number or went to a location, other than an HEMC office, to make a payment.

“Members should hang up at once and report the call to their local law enforcement,” cautions Susan Baker, Manager of Member Services. “If HEMC members have questions regarding their accounts, customer service representatives can be reached at 706-754-2114, 706-865-4362 or 800-640-6812.”

HEMC Awards Funds to Local Organizations

As an electric membership cooperative owned by the members we serve, Habersham EMC is committed to giving back to our community. House Bill 431 helps us do that by allowing EMCs in Georgia to use capital credits that go unclaimed for five years to fund education, economic development and 501(c)(3) charitable organizations in our service area.

In 2016, HEMC representatives presented a total of $33,858 in unclaimed Capital Credits to the following organizations:

HEMC Returns $1.5 million to Members

For the 30th consecutive year, Habersham EMC (HEMC) members have received capital credit checks. Since 1987, HEMC has returned more than $13 million to members. This year’s retirement includes the return of capital contributed by members in 1986.

Member capital is utilized for a period of time to finance electric system improvements and maintain the financial strength required by HEMC’s lenders. Then it is returned, demonstrating our cooperative, non-profit operation.
